Barnard, NC

Elevation:1,535 ft
Population: Unknown

Barnard, NC once boasted a population of nearly 1,000 people. In the 1800's farmers would drive their livestock to market along the French Broad River on a road called the Drover's trail. Peppered along this trail were many small stock-stand towns that offered a place to pin up the animals for the night. Barnard was one of these towns. After the railroad replaced the Drover's trail in the 1880s a person could make the journey from Knoxville to Asheville in a single day, leaving Barnard out to dry. Over the years the town has slowly withered away and now the only person left is Wayne. If you stop to speak with him he'll point to the decomposing buildings and tell you of the business's that used to occupy them. He'll tell you about his brother, who everyone called Froggy, and the trouble the got into growing up. Now he spends his days sitting in front of the towns last standing building, sometimes in the company of a small dog or two, waving at every car that passes by.
